Is Email destroying our historical record?
I saw this on the Huffington Post the other day. Will we look back on history the same without hard written documentation? Will future generations be able to understand the thought processes behind today's major historical events? I think it even goes further than that. Email is changing the way we communicate period. I cannot remember the last handwritten letter I wrote. Or typewritten for that matter. I either call the person, email them or text them my message if it is not face to face. And more often it seems to be one of the first three. Is technology causing us to become more isolated? There are many social sites on the web that have millions of users but are those users more social? Is it the same thing to post a message on someones Myspace page as it would be to tell them in person? Which is more social and is there a difference? The web allows us to meet and make friends with people across the world. That is all fine and good but what about the people around you? Is it better to have actually face to face friends? Do we benefit more psychologically from physical contact with people? I don't know. I think a mix of both would be best. With all of our diverse interests, hobbies, jobs, etc finding friends that live near you to fulfill all of these is difficult. The web really does offer more opportunities, but sometimes you just want someone to go out to dinner with, to a movie, concert, etc. too.
